Career structure – promotional positions

Appointments to these positions are made in response to advertised vacancies only.

Clinical nurse or clinical midwife – RN pay point level 2, increment 1 to 4.
Responsible for the quality of the patient care delivery and the standard of nursing practice in an assigned ward or unit.

Staff development nurse or staff development midwife – RN pay point level 2, increment 1 to 4.
Implements and evaluates staff development and education programs at the ward or unit level.

Area manager – RN pay point level 2, increment 1 to 4.
Responsible for managing human and material resources within a defined area in consultation with the nurse manager.

Clinical nurse manager or clinical midwifery manager – senior RN pay point level 3.
Responsible for the management and standards of clinical nursing / midwifery practice, patient care delivery, human and material resources and the budget within an assigned specialty area.

Clinical nurse specialist or clinical midwifery specialist – senior RN pay point level 3.
Responsible for patient safety and quality patient care, by all clinical nursing and midwifery personnel, within an assigned specialty area. The clinical nurse / midwifery specialist is responsible for developing standards of practice, implementing changes to clinical practice, initiating research and quality improvement activities.

Clinical nurse consultant or clinical midwifery consultant – senior RN pay point level 4.
Provides a clinical consultancy service within an assigned area of specialty, developing standards of practice and implementing changes to clinical practice. Also initiates research and quality improvement activities within their area of expertise.

Nurse manager or midwifery manager – senior RN pay point level 1–3.
Develops policies and standards to provide sound human resource management practices within the hospital. Also responsible for managing nursing or midwifery staff.

Staff development educator – senior RN pay point level 3.
Implements and evaluates staff development and education programs at the hospital / health service level.

Nurse practitioner – senior RN pay point level 5–7.
A nurse practitioner is an experienced RN authorised to work at an advanced level of clinical practice within a specialty area. This practice is based on a legislative framework requiring completion of specified postgraduate education (master’s degree).

Nursing director / co-director or midwifery director / co-director – senior RN pay point level 8–10.
Responsible for the operational management, standards of practice and support services within the relevant division of their hospital / health service. They are members of the divisional executives responsible for achieving the division’s business plan and strategic goals.

Executive director of nursing or executive director of midwifery – senior RN pay point level 8–10.
Manages all nursing and / or midwifery services as well as other patient services within a hospital or district. Provides organisational and professional leadership to contribute to developing and achieving strategic goals, policies, healthcare reforms, budget and quality management of nursing and / or midwifery and a range of professional and facility / patient support services.
