Career structure
Nursing and midwifery are professions with options and opportunity for advancement. Below is a chronological list of generic positions available for nurses and midwives in Western Australia.
Enrolled nurses
Graduate enrolled nurse – EN pay point level 1.
After completing an 18 month Diploma qualification at TAFE or Marr Mooditj, the enrolled nurse (EN) is eligible for registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia (NMBWA). Graduate ENs undertake a graduate program, which is a 12–24 month paid position offering a supportive transition into the workforce.
Enrolled nurse (EN) – EN pay point level 1–4.
The EN helps provide nursing care under direct supervision of the registered nurse (RN). ENs retain responsibility and independence, while remaining accountable to the RN for all delegated functions.
Advanced skills enrolled nurse – EN pay point level 5.
This is a promotional position available for ENs. Appointments are made in response to advertised vacancies only. These nurses still provide nursing care under direct supervision of the RN, however, they provide care with advanced level clinical skills. They retain responsibility for their personal actions whilst remaining accountable to the RN for all delegated functions.
Registered nurses and midwives
Graduate registered nurse – RN pay point level 1, increment 1.
These nurses have recently completed a three to three and a half year university degree (or equivalent if from overseas). On completion, they are eligible for registration with the NMBWA. Graduate RNs undertake a graduate nurse program, which is a 12–24 month paid position offering the graduate RN a supportive transition into the workforce.
Graduate registered midwife – RN pay point level 1, increment determined by previous nursing experience.
Graduate registered midwives (RMs) have either completed a 3 year direct entry university degree or are RNs who have undertaken further training at university and in hospitals. On completion of training they are eligible for registration with the NMBWA as a registered midwife (RM). The graduate RM then undertakes a further 12 month transition in hospitals.
Registered nurse (RN), registered midwife (RM) or registered mental health nurse – RN pay point level 1, increment 1 to 9.
RNs, RMs and registered mental health nurses act as role models and undertake a teaching role in nursing practice for ENs and junior staff.
Further advancement
All higher positions are considered promotional positions.
