Scholarships for 2013 are now closed. The Nursing and Midwifery Scholarships for study in 2014 will open in November 2013.

What is the eligibility criteria?

Initial Registration - Enrolled Nurse Scholarships

  • Applicants must have successfully completed semester one of the Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled Nursing) at a Western Australian (WA) Vocational Education and Training Institution. Students commencing Semester 1 2013 must submit their previous semester results prior to application closing date. If you have not received your results, please inform the Nursing and Midwifery Office.
  • Students commencing Stage 2 units midyear are eligible to apply, and are required to submit their previous semester results prior to commencement.
  • Provide confirmation of enrolment* at a WA Vocational Education and Training Institution for the units you plan to study in 2013. Failure to provide this by the closing date will disqualify you from receiving a scholarship.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia, and must be currently residing in WA.
  • Assistant in Nursing candidates undertaking education in Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled Nursing) at a WA Vocational Education and Training Institution are eligible to apply.
  • Aboriginal students undertaking the Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled Nursing) are eligible to apply.

Up to a maximum of $1000 may be awarded per year.

Initial Registration - Registered Nurse/Midwifery Scholarships

  • Applicants must have successfully completed semester one and two of the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or (Midwifery) Degree; or equivalent for the Graduate Pathway program with recognition of prior learning.
  • Students commencing their studies in Semester 1 2013 must submit their previous semester results prior to application closing date. If you have not received your results, please inform the Nursing and Midwidery Office.
  • Students commencing 2nd year units midyear 2013 are eligible to apply, and are required to submit their previous semester results prior to commencement.
  • Provide confirmation of enrolment* at a WA University for the units of study for first and second semesters 2012. Failure to provide this by the closing date will disqualify you from receiving a scholarship.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia, and must be currently residing in WA.
  • Enrolled Nurses undertaking a Bachelor of Nursing Degree; or equivalent for the EN to RN conversion program with recognition of prior learning are eligible to apply.
  • Aboriginal students undertaking the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or (Midwifery) Degree are eligible to apply.

Up to a maximum of $3000 may be awarded per year.

Initial Registration - Registered Nurse Scholarships (Honours)

  • Applicants must have successfully completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Students commencing Honours in Semester 1 2013 must submit their previous semester results prior to application closing date. If you have not received your results, please inform the Nursing and Midwidery Office.
  • Students commencing Honours midyear 2013 are eligible to apply, and are required to submit their previous semester results prior to commencement.
  • Provide confirmation of enrolment* at a WA University for the units of study for first and second semesters 2012. Failure to provide this by the closing date will disqualify you from receiving a scholarship.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia and must be currently residing in WA.

Up to a maximum of $3000 may be awarded per year.

Postgraduate Scholarships
(For example Enrolled Nurse Specialisation, Registered Nurse Specialisation, Midwifery and Nurse Practitioners)

  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia, and currently residing in WA.
  • Applicants must be currently registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Provide confirmation of enrolment* at a WA University/Institution for the units you plan to study in the first and second semesters 2013.  Failure to provide this by the closing date will disqualify you from receiving a scholarship.  (If the course is not offered in WA, you may still apply, however, you are required to provide supporting evidence of why this course has been chosen).
  • Applicants must be working in the WA public health system at the date of closure for applications.
  • A limited amount of postgraduate scholarships are available to nurses and midwives working in the private and publicly funded sectors, however, priority will be given to those working in the public health sector.
  • Enrolled nurses must be working in area of specialization related to their chosen course ie mental health.
  • Private Sector applicants that are receiving funding from another source for 2013 study are in-eligible to apply.

Please note that there are a limited number of scholarship available for 2013.

The value of scholarships depends on the program and the criteria. Set amounts apply per unit to a maximum value per year.

Successful applicants enrolled in courses that are Commonwealth supported or hospital-based will be funded on a pro rata basis.

Renewal of Registration Scholarships- Registered Nurse, Enrolled Nurse and Midwife

  • Applicants must be a registered nurse, midwife or enrolled nurse who is planning to return to nursing and is not currently registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia, and currently residing in WA.
  • Provide confirmation of enrolment at a WA University for the units of study for first and second semesters 2012 or enrolment at an approved Education Provider for a Re-entry to nursing program. Failure to provide this by the closing date will disqualify you from receiving a scholarship.

 Up to the maximum of 80% of the unit cost may be awarded.

How can I prove that I am an Australian Citizen/Permanent Resident?

By providing a copy of your birth certificate, passport (including the VISA page) or Australian Citizenship certificate.


If I am a New Zealand Citizen, am I eligible to apply?

Yes, you are required to provide evidence of citizenship/permanent residency from Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) such as a Special Category Visa.


Do I need to provide evidence of enrolment?

Yes, please refer to the examples noted under the eligibility criteria. Please note that these are the only documents that will be accepted as proof of enrolment.


Do I need to have 12 months clinical experience to apply for a postgraduate scholarship?

  • No, however if the demand for scholarships exceeds funding, priority will be given to nurses and midwives with greater than 2 years post registration experience.
  • This is not applicable for RNs studying to become a Nurse Practitioner.

If I am an undergraduate (direct-entry) can I apply in my first year?

No, you must have successfully completed semester one and two of the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or (Midwifery) degree, or equivalent for the Graduate Pathway program with recognition of prior learning.


If I am an Enrolled Nurse undertaking the EN to RN Conversion can I apply in my first year?

Yes.


Where can I study to be eligible for funding?

Funding is available for courses being undertaken at a WA Tertiary Institution (ie. University) and Vocational Education and Training Institution (ie. previously identified as TAFE).

If the course is not offered in WA, you may still apply however you are required to provide supporting evidence of why this course has been chosen.


What documents do I need to attach to my application?

Initial Registration Scholarships:

  • Covering Letter
  • Proof of Australian Citizenship/Permanent Residency
  • Evidence of Enrolment of units of study
  • Document supporting name change (if applicable)
  • Previous Semesters results (if applicable)
  • Proof of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) [ie. copy of current registration certificate or print-out from the NMBW/AHPRA website]

Postgraduate Scholarships:

Public Sector

  • Covering Letter
  • Evidence of Enrolment of units of study
  • Previous Semester results (if applicable)

Private Sector

  • Covering Letter
  • Proof of Australian Citizenship/Permanent Residency
  • Evidence of Enrolment of units of study
  • Document supporting name change (if applicable)

  • Letter of support from Director of Nursing

Please note that supporting documentation may only be attached in MS Word, JPEG or PDF file format.


Can I apply for a scholarship for units completed in a previous semester?

No, all applications for scholarships must be for the upcoming study year.


How will I receive my money?

Funds will be paid direct to the successful recipient in the form of a cheque.


Are there any tax implications?

  • The scholarship is considered assessable income for personal taxation purposes.
  • Individual applicants are responsible for any tax liability related to the scholarship.

How long is the application process?

The full application process will take approximately 4-6 weeks.  Applications will be reviewed and processed on a monthly basis.


When will I receive my money?

The process for the granting of ALL scholarships offered by the Nursing and Midwifery Office has been revised and amended.

Funding will be provided at the end of each semester upon receipt of a copy of your results for successfully completed units, together with a tax invoice/receipt.


Can I apply for a scholarship more than once?

Yes, but please note that successful applicants may only be awarded one scholarship per year.


If I am employed in the private sector, am I eligible to apply?

A limited amount of postgraduate scholarships are available to nurses and midwives working in the private and publicly funded sectors, however, priority will be given to those working in the public health sector.


What should be contained in the cover letter?

Applications for scholarships are highly competitive and your cover letter should contain information regarding why you should be awarded a scholarship.


Can I apply for a scholarship if I work in the private sector and I am receiving monies from another source?

No. If you are receiving funding from another source in the private sector then you are ineligible to apply for a Nursing and Midwifery Office scholarship. If you are awarded a scholarship and you have not disclosed other funding sources, then the scholarship is deemed void and invalid and you may be responsible to pay back any monies that you received from the Nursing and Midwifery Office.


Can I appeal the decision made if I do not receive a scholarship?

The nursing and Midwifery Office has an appeals process. Please review the following 3 documents to find out if you meet the criteria to have the decision appealed.
