Returning to nursing or midwifery

How to return to nursing or midwifery – renewing your registration

Renewal of registration programs are available for enrolled nurses (ENs), registered nurses (RNs) and midwives whose original registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board of WA (NMBWA) has lapsed. Those from interstate may apply. Priorities will be given to those committed to working for WA Health upon successful course completion.

A renewal of registration program for mental health nurses is currently only offered at Edith Cowan University (external site).

Each renewal of registration program has study options which allow you a degree of flexibility in which to complete the required components for graduation and registration with the NMBWA. The study options available for ENs, RNs and midwives vary but essentially each course is made up of theory and clinical components to assist in gaining competency before entering the workforce.

In general, assessment requirements to pass all of these programs are a minimum of 80% pass mark in all theory components and further demonstrated competence in the clinical practice to the Australia Nursing and Midwifery Council standards. However, each program is different and assessment requirements differ for ENs, RNs and midwives. Please check the requirements before applying for the programs.
