Nursing and midwifery in Western Australia

Moving from overseas or interstate

Requirements to work

To be eligible for employment as a nurse or a midwife in Western Australia, there are specific requirements that you must fulfill:

  • professional registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia (NMBWA)
  • criminal record screening
  • a visa that allows you to work in Australia – for all overseas employees
  • private health insurance – for all sponsored overseas employees

Registration

Nurses or midwives registered in another state or territory of Australia or in New Zealand are eligible to apply for registration in Western Australia under mutual recognition.

The NMBWA (external site) will answer all queries about your eligibility or application for registration. They will also advise you about any conditions attached to an overseas application for registration such as the need to sit an English language test or complete a bridging course.

WA Health cannot advise you in regard to your application for registration. We are unable to assist with sponsorship to undertake bridging courses, English language testing or initial training.

Criminal screening

Before anyone can be employed by WA Health they must pass a criminal record clearance (new window).

Applicants who will be employed in an area that cares for children (under the age of 18) will also need to pass a working with children check (external site).

Visa

WA Health can assist with sponsorship for temporary or permanent residency visas only (conditions apply). You must have private health insurance (new window) for all persons covered by the visa if being sponsored by WA Health.

Applicants are responsible for obtaining all other types of visas. Please note sponsorship for enrolled nurses is only available in WA’s regional and remote areas, not the metropolitan area.

Overseas applicants must obtain NMBWA registration prior to a sponsored visa being approved by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (external site).
