Nursing and midwifery in Western Australia

Moving from overseas or interstate

Bridging your registration

The registration bridging program is offered to overseas-educated nurses and midwives who want to work in Western Australia. The NMBWA will advise overseas applicants if they are required to undertake this program in order to gain initial registration in WA.

The program for nurses is a full-time internal course consisting of theory and clinical components.

The course for midwives consists of a combination of distance learning and internal theory and clinical components.

To be eligible for the registered nurse registration bridging program, overseas applicants who are not Australian citizens or permanent residents must:

  • have a minimum of two years post registration experience working as a registered nurse in an acute clinical setting
  • be currently practising as a registered nurse in an acute clinical setting
  • have applied to the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia and received a letter of eligibility to complete a registration bridging program for overseas educated registered nurses
