2011 Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards
The 2011 Gala Ball was held at the Burswood Entertainment Complex on Saturday 17 September.
750 guests, including the Mr Albert Jacobs MLA (member for Ocean Reef), Mr Roger Cook (Member for Kwinana) and Dr David Russell-Weisz (Acting Director General), were there to witness Tania McWilliams from Princess Margaret Hospital for Children named the 2011 Nurse / Midwife of the Year.
Tania McWilliams - 2011 Nurse / Midwife of the Year
Working in Princess Margaret Hospital’s Total Care Burns Unit, Tania has played a vital role educating and supporting staff members, so they can better help burns patients manage their wounds and improve their recovery.
Tania’s accomplishments include:
- founding, implementing and evaluating the first School Reintegration Program – a program for paediatric burns survivors to ensure a smooth transition back to school and prevent teasing
- writing the content for the WoundsWest Burns Module, in collaboration with Professor Fiona Wood
- improving and revitalising Princess Margaret Hospital’s Burns Telehealth Service.

Professor Robin Watts – 2011 Lifetime Achievement Recipient
Professor Watts has a long standing involvement with the School of Nursing & Midwifery at Curtin University, being a Foundation Professor of Nursing and previous Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery during the periods of 1983 and 1995. Despite her full time position as Executive Director, University Planning, Curtin University since 1999, Professor Watts has been a major driving force in the strategic direction for nursing, midwifery and healthcare in WA.
Professor Watts is an internationally acknowledged and widely published nurse educator and her professional experience spans across Honduras, Thailand, Canada and the USA.
Robin has received an Order of Australia Award for her contribution to Nursing in 2010, as well as being nominated by the Nurses Board of WA for Citizen of the Year in the professional category in 2005.
