Delivering a Healthy WA
Nursing and midwifery in Western Australia

Find your pathway!

There are new and innovative pathways that you can choose from. The following are new pathways established in collaboration with training and health organisations.

  • Support for Aboriginal students
Aboriginal student services are available at most universities and higher education facilities. They offer a range of services to encourage the participation of Aboriginal students in courses.
  • Assistants in Nursing (AIN)
Many nurses have started their journey as an Assistant in Nursing and the Nursing and Midwifery Office has been instrumental in re-establishing this career pathway by funding Assistant in Nursing (Acute Care) Traineeships.

West Coast Institute of Training’s Aboriginal Academy of Sport, Health and Education (AASHE) also offers a Certificate III Health Service Assistance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (PDF 1.08MB). The Nursing and Midwifery Office is currently exploring ways to support the recruitment process.
  • Cadetship program
The Nursing and Midwifery Office (NMO) is committed to increasing the number of Aboriginal nurses and midwives employed across Western Australia.

Attracting and ultimately retaining strong performing Aboriginal nurses and midwives will enhance nursing and midwifery’s skilled workforce. We believe that an Aboriginal Cadetship Program will help to achieve this.

The aim of The Nursing and Midwifery Cadetship Program is to improve access and equity in employment and education for Aboriginal Australians.

Cadetships provide a valuable chance to help WA Health facilitate and develop highly skilled, tertiary qualified Aboriginal employees. The program will:
    • offer employment to Aboriginal students within WA Health sites for the duration of their studies
    • increase the number of tertiary qualified Aboriginal nurses and midwives within WA
    • improve employment opportunities for Aboriginal people
    • improve the quality of health services and programs to Aboriginals, through increased participation of Aboriginal employees.

You can register your interest to keep informed about this program between application dates.
