Learning
There are a number of educational pathways you can take to become a nurse or midwife. All courses of study involve theory units and clinical placements, otherwise know as practicums or pracs for short.
To become an RN, you must complete an appropriate course of study, or Bachelor Degree, at university. The most fitting subjects to study in Year 12 are human biology or any other science subject, maths and TEE level English. These subjects provide you with a sound knowledge base for undertaking nursing studies. However subjects required can vary according to the universities so it is advisable to research each university’s prerequisite requirements.
The Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) to enter a nursing course typically sits between 65 and 85. This varies from university to university and year to year.
Enrolled nursing courses are run through TAFE and accredited Aboriginal Health Training Colleges. A pass in Year 12 English is required to be eligible. It is recommended that you contact TAFE or Marr Mooditj, Western Australia’s Aboriginal Health Training College, to find out the selection criteria. Alternative pathways are also available to gain entrance into TAFE.
