Nursing and midwifery in Western Australia

Become a nurse or midwife

Learning – courses you can attend

Enrolled nursing

TAFE and Marr Mooditj offer a Diploma in Enrolled Nursing, which takes 18 months full-time to complete. Once you have graduated, you are eligible to be registered as an enrolled nurse (EN) with the Nurses and Midwives Board of WA.

Registered nursing

To become a registered nurse (RN) you must complete a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or a Bachelor of Nursing at university. The time it takes to complete these courses ranges from three years to three and a half years.

Midwifery

In order to become a midwife in previous years you were required to complete a nursing degree and then study midwifery at a postgraduate level. This is still the case in many of the Western Australian universities. However, Curtin University now offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Science (Midwifery), which takes 3 years to complete. This course does not have the pre-requisite of a nursing qualification.

Certificate IV in Health Science Foundations

If you find that you have not met the secondary education requirements for TAFE or university, don’t panic. TAFE offers a Certificate IV in Health Science Foundations that will provide the academic knowledge for entry into a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) at university. This course will also provide preparation for entry into a Diploma of Enrolled Nursing at TAFE. The qualification will enhance the educational prospects for those wishing to undertake further study to train as an RN, EN or midwife.

Mature age students

Educational pathways are also available for mature age students – people over the age of 20. Entry into nursing and midwifery varies depending upon your work experience, and education. There are several ways for mature age students to enter nursing and/or midwifery and this will vary for each individual.

We recommend you contact the Tertiary Entrance Ranks (TER) Preparation Course Colleges, Canning College and Tuart College, for further information and explanations. You will need to complete a TER Preparation Course, a Bridging Course or a Special Tertiary Admissions Test before undertaking any nursing courses within Western Australia.

Enrolled nurse to registered nurse pathways

If you have graduated as an EN and want to increase your skills to become a RN, Curtin and Edith Cowan Universities offer Enrolled Nurse Pathway courses. This mode of study is varied and we recommend that you contact the universities directly.

Graduate pathways

For those who already hold a bachelor’s degree and want to study registered nursing, Curtin University and the University of Western Australia (UWA) offer a Graduate Pathway or Entry-to-Practice course. These courses take two years to complete and provide a path to initial registration as an RN with the Nurses and Midwives Board of WA (NMBWA).

Note that the Entry-to-Practice course at UWA is scheduled to commence semester two 2009. This course is awaiting final approval by UWA and the NMBWA.

For detailed information about courses contact the individual university or TAFE campuses.
